Which BMP files are supported?

Will colors change?
No. The conversion is lossless: PNG simply compresses the uncompressed pixel data, so colors are identical to the source.
Why is the PNG so much smaller?
BMP stores raw pixels with no compression, while PNG applies zlib compression, commonly reducing the file size by up to 90 percent.
Can compressed BMPs be converted?
No. Compressed BMP files (BI_RLE or similar) produce an error, so re-save the image as uncompressed 24 or 32-bit BMP first.
Is the output transparent?
Only if the source BMP is 32-bit: its alpha channel is carried into the PNG. 24-bit BMP sources produce fully opaque PNGs.
