File Size Converter

Convert between bytes, KB, MB, GB, and TB. Decimal and binary units (MB vs MiB) both supported.

Storage limits are quoted in decimal units while operating systems often report binary ones — a classic source of confusion. This converter translates between bytes, KB, MB, GB, and TB in both decimal and binary notation. You always see the equivalent in every unit at once. Conversion is instant and local.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about file size converter.

What is the difference between MB and MiB?

MB is decimal: 1 MB equals 1,000,000 bytes. MiB is binary: 1 MiB equals 1,048,576 bytes. The tool shows both columns for every unit so you never mix the two systems.

Why does my OS show a smaller size than the drive box?

Storage drives are advertised in decimal units (GB), while operating systems report sizes in binary units (GiB). A 500 GB drive therefore appears as about 465 GiB — both figures are correct.

Which units are supported?

Bytes through petabytes in decimal (KB, MB, GB, TB, PB) and bytes through tebibytes in binary (KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB), with every equivalent size shown in a single table.

How accurate are the converted values?

Each result is shown to 4 significant figures, which is precise enough for practical file-size comparisons and cloud storage planning.

Does this need an internet connection?

No. Conversion is instant arithmetic executed locally in your browser, so it works offline and your values are never sent anywhere.
